This building is testament to our ability to preserve the charm of an existing building while converting it to a new use. A heritage mansion formerly occupied by Alliance Francaise school was retained, restored and converted into two townhouses and the car park at the rear developed with a new three-level apartment building. The entry to the new building is through the original arched heritage entryway via a panelled ‘ante room’, where it then breaks into the new building at the rear, creating a rich contrast of heritage and modern design. Copper and timber cladding and angled wall planes compliment the colour and texture of the original brick and terracotta-roofed home featuring an uncompromising contrast of styles and form. A laser-cut art installation along the fence to the laneway designed by Martin Hodge provides screening as well as activating with the public.
